BALTIMORE - The good news spread through the Yankees' clubhouse with a swiftness usually reserved for a big trade. This time, however, Jose Contreras' teammates were reacting more as human beings than baseball players.

This was bigger than a blockbuster trade. Their unanimous reaction before Tuesday's game to learning that Contreras' wife and two daughters had fled Cuba and were about to be reunited with the pitcher in Miami was joy and relief.
