PATERSON - Environmental testers have determined that the site of a former paint manufacturer is a poor spot for an elementary school, scuttling plans that have already cost the Paterson school district hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In a report commissioned by the New Jersey Schools Construction Corp., researchers conclude that the site of the former Spectrachem Corp. on Sheridan Avenue is so contaminated that cleaning it would be prohibitively difficult and time-consuming. The conclusion: Find another spot to build.
