Area Consumer Prices Fall Slightly ; Food, Gas Costs Down for December

Summary


In another sign inflation is almost non-existent, the Labor Department reported on Friday consumer prices in the metropolitan area fell by 0.1 percent last month, the 13th consecutive period in which prices were relatively flat.

Prices have not moved up or down by more than 0.5 percent since November 2008, resulting in a modest increase of 2.3 percent in the Consumer Price Index for North Jersey and the New York metropolitan area.
