NEW YORK - Just 12 pitches into Friday night's Subway Series opener, Terry Collins already was out of his dugout, jogging to the mound to talk with starter Jonathan Niese. Niese had given up three straight hits, amounting to two runs, and the Mets' manager knew he had to do something.

A short conversation later, Niese retired Alex Rodriguez on an easy ground ball, and though the pitcher would surrender one more RBI hit before getting out of the inning, the sense of imminent crisis dissipated as quickly as it had risen. With that, Niese and the irregular heartbeat that forced him to leave his last start settled down, putting up five straight zeros against the Yankees' imposing lineup.
