CINCINNATI - A Bush-bashing Iraq war veteran and a Republican former state lawmaker were neck-and-neck Tuesday in a closely watched House race that could serve as a bellwether for next year's midterm elections.

With 62 percent of precincts reporting, Republican Jean Schmidt had 51 percent, or 35,161 votes, to 49 percent for Democrat Paul Hackett, who had 34,175 votes.
