A day after being obliterated by the Mitchell Report, the Yankee hierarchy was sifting through its embarrassment, as well as a private irritation at having been singled out by the 409 page document. "It made it seem like [the steroid problem] was all about us," is what one insider said. No one contested the integrity of Mitchell's search, only how narrow it was in scope.

Still, the Yankees had no on-the-record comment about Roger Clemens' alleged cheating on Friday and were instead focusing on Andy Pettitte. The left-hander, who was named by former strength coach Brian McNamee as an HGH user in 2002, is expected to tell the team his side of the story in the next few days. Yankee officials are prepared to accept Pettitte's explanation - and, presumably, his apology - and move on, although it remains to be seen whether Pettitte or any other player named in the investigation will be disciplined by the commissioner's office.
