Summary

This is a great time of the year for classical music lovers on a tight budget. The New York Philharmonic kicks off its summer of freebies with the annual Memorial Day concert at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Manhattan (May 31), featuring music by Wagner and Mussorgsky-Ravel. Soon follows the 40th season of free concerts in the parks: With violinist Leonidas Kavakos as featured soloist, David Robertson conducts Barber, Charles Ives, and John Adams at the Great Lawn on July 14, and Smetana, Mendelssohn, and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" on July 19. Come for the music and stay for the fireworks.

Caramoor International Music Festival (June 26 through Aug. 14) opens with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, violinist Jennifer Frautschi, and pianist Cecile Licad in a Latin-themed program of music by Sarasate, De Falla, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Latin flavor returns on July 9, when the New York Festival of Song presents works by Granados, Faure, and Joaquin Turina in - where else? - the Spanish Courtyard.
