WE OFTEN hear about the delicate balance airports must strike between ensuring passengers' safety and protecting their privacy. Now, officials at the Port Authority are invoking another potential conflict of interest: passenger security versus airport efficiency.

The debate stems from the girlfriend-inspired incursion into a supposedly secure area at Newark Liberty International Airport in January. A lovelorn Rutgers student slipped under a ribbon "fence" and walked in and out of a boarding area as the nearest security guard snoozed. When a passenger alerted officials, the airport went on red alert and flights were grounded for six hours, delaying some travelers by an entire day.
