Charter School Shaping Up ; Paterson's Latest Addition Will Provide Grades 6, 7, 8

PATERSON - After more than a year of planning, the city's newest charter school will open this fall on Spruce Street. The Great Falls Charter School will serve 162 students in Grades 6, 7, and 8, and boast small classes and hands-on learning - mainstay attributes of charter schools across the state.

Charter schools are non-profit organizations funded by public money and run by independent boards of trustees. They are separate from local boards of education but must meet the same standards as public schools. Applications to attend a charter school can be submitted by any Paterson child and are randomly chosen by school officials. Space at Great Falls is still open for Grades 7 and 8.
