PARAMUS -- Governor-elect Chris Christie swore in two new Republican Borough Council members Tuesday, drawing attention to the party's seizure of control in what has for years been a Democratic stronghold.

Christie said he agreed to deliver the oath of office to Councilmen Michael Rohdieck and Alan Brundage to follow through on a promise to Councilwoman Cathy Bentz, whom he swore in last year. But he acknowledged that his appearance could also be interpreted as a political statement. The ceremony was one of four he planned to attend across the state.
