The Newark Archdiocese says its annual fund-raising drive has been gradually recovering from a downturn that began during the national clergy abuse crisis.

The number of North Jersey Catholics contributing to the 2007 Archbishop's Annual Appeal grew by more than 500 from the year before, and the average gift increased to $231 from $220, Carla Gonzalez, executive director of development, said last week. Altogether, the appeal raised $11.5 million.
