NEW JERSEY'S Farmland Assessment program was adopted in 1964 with the laudable goal of encouraging farming in the Garden State.
Coming at a time when many suburban communities were just developing, it made sense to give farmers a property tax break to help them keep farming. Under the program, farmland is assessed at a fraction of the value it would have if used for non-farming purposes. In a state where property taxes can easily exceed $10,000 a year, a sizable property tax break is a nice benefit to have.See the full content of this document
