Frankly, I never understood this. And by the time I graduated in 1972, I had pretty much made up my mind that if I ever became a teacher, kids who raised their hands and gave correct answers would get smacked, and kids who yelled out funny stuff would get candy bars and all-expense-paid trips to Cancun.
