TRENTON A Republican state senator's allegations of political patronage in poor, urban school districts threatened to sidetrack a hearing held Tuesday by lawmakers trying to cut New Jersey's highest- in-the-nation property taxes.

Sen. Gerald Cardinale took issue with Union City school officials' claims of high student achievement, saying that state residents worry about corruption in the 31 city school districts including Union City that receive extra state aid.
