Summary


Joe Torre and Brian Cashman have entertained chances to leave that angry old man in Tampa, but they never do. Along the sympathy trail, the Yankees manager and general manager have been transformed into the most sympathetic of characters, as though they're second- shift assembly line grunts trapped out of desperation to keep that holiday time and a half and $20 co-pay on prescriptions.

So, Torre gets the silent treatment and tweaks to his coaching staff, Cashman the telephone calls of screaming rage, and together they've been one foot out the door, promising, just promising, to find that utopia that must exist beyond the barbed wire fences of George Steinbrenner's Yankee Stadium.
