Summary
It was supposed to have been a fund-raiser for Lance Ong - a high- profile Maywood musician and composer (he's done recordings with Erykah Badu, the Pointer Sisters, Grand Funk Railroad, David Sanborn and many others) with a high-expense problem -- cancer. Now, sadly, a Tuesday all-star blues jam at Mexicali Live in Teaneck has become a memorial. Ong died Dec. 7.
TELL ME MORE: Blues stars Hubert Sumlin and Gil Parris are among the headliners expected for the Tuesday event, proceeds from which will go to defray Ong's medical expenses. Though keyboardist Ong recorded with everyone from gospel star Andrae Crouch (their 1979 release "I'll Be Thinking of You" won a Grammy) to Frankie Beverly and Maze to his wife, singer Nicole Hart, he was handicapped by a problem common to self-employed musicians: His medical coverage was spotty. That's why you'll often see players pitching in for a fund- raiser like this one -- now more a benefit for Ong's survivors. Other performers expected at the event, organized by WFDU host Bob Putignano and manager Mark Meding: Hart, Steve Johnson, Johnny Feds & Da Blues Boyz, Dave Keyes and Rob Paparozzi, Gina Fox and WBGO's Bob Porter.See the full content of this document
