Westwood Mayor John Birkner Jr. said Tuesday that he is dropping out of the race to become one of the Bergen County Democratic Organization's freeholder nominees. Birkner is the second Democrat to drop out. Julie O'Brien, a former freeholder who was voted out of her seat last year, announced last week that she was withdrawing.

The remaining candidates for the party's nominations for three freeholder seats are Freeholders Elizabeth Calabrese and James Carroll, Northvale Mayor John Hogan, Maywood Mayor Timothy Eustace, former Ridgefield Councilman Rob Kovic, Cid Wilson of Leonia, Dr. Pargellan McCall of Hackensack, and Sabastian Belfon of Cliffside Park.
