AFTER weeks of scuffling, Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan and trustees at Bergen Community College have brokered a reasonable compromise that should promote a spending check-and- balance at the college while protecting its autonomy.
Donovan has been seeking to expand her authority at BCC as part of an overall review of spending countywide. She had argued that BCC operated with little official accountability and needed to be more transparent to the public that funds it. The school receives 15 to 20 percent of its $127 million budget from the county; estimates vary.
