Summary


ADVOCATES for the cleanup of the Passaic River have had to develop a great deal of patience, as they have waited for significant progress in returning the waters to their natural state.

Now at least they know the year the first phase of the cleanup will begin: 2010. That may not sound like a milestone, but it has been long years since talk of a cleanup started. The lower Passaic has been poisoned by tons of dioxin that were dumped into its waters at the site of the former Diamond Alkali plant in Newark during the production of Agent Orange. Other cancer-causing toxins, such as PCBs, are also present in the river's sediment and must be removed if the river is to ever be revived.
