There are two types of travel writers: the independently wealthy and the ones who are hoping to make a living by writing travel stories.
And, of course, a few write or edit guidebooks. You can apparently make good money if you come up with a new type of series - - say, the most amazing hotel minibars of the USA. Otherwise, it's an awful lot of work for not a great deal of pay. And you'll probably spend a lot more time hunting down niggling details than having an adventure exploring your destination. And those details could change before your book even comes out.
