BOSTON - The Yankees left Fenway Sunday night having delivered a devastating message to the Red Sox, if not the rest of the American League. Not only did they take 2-of-3 from Boston, sucking the life out of the race in the East, but they destroyed Boston's best hope for parity in October.

Josh Beckett, the great equalizer, allowed a career-high five home runs - count 'em - as the Yankees rolled to an 8-4 victory. There, on national television, the Red Sox' ace was hammered beyond recognition, allowing all eight run on nine hits. He was flattened by a Yankee hitting machine that, in the two games they took from the Sox, batted .388 with 16 extra base hits, including seven HRs.
