Summary


I READ "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in junior high. That puts the experience back about four decades in the year 1970. I would be hard-pressed to recall exactly how the book was presented to my English class, aside from being told that the language used by Mark Twain was representative of how his characters would have spoken in real life.

Some words, in particular the N-word, would be offensive to our ears, my English teacher explained. And that was about it. Onto the Mighty Mississippi we went.
