Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts plans to announce this morning that he will not seek re-election this fall, ending a 22-year career in the Legislature, two top Democrats familiar with his plans said Tuesday night.

Roberts, D-Camden, the most powerful figure in the lower house, plans to break the news to fellow South Jersey Democrats at an 8 a.m. breakfast meeting in Camden County, said the Democratic sources. The sources, who requested anonymity when speaking in advance of the announcement, said Roberts felt it was time to step aside after a prolific and grueling State House career.
