Summary


A YEAR AGO, much of the nation was optimistic about a new presidential administration. Barack Obama's message of hope during a national and global crisis was a beacon in a dark time. But words can illuminate only so much.

At the close of 2009, approximately 10 percent of the American workforce is not working. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue. The financial markets did not collapse, as feared last December, but the economic recovery Americans long for has not taken hold. Perhaps the worst is over, but for those seeking jobs and credit, there is little joy.
