ATLANTA Pedro Martinez was just beginning to stretch in the outfield when the media began descending around him to spy the latest developments in his path back to the major leagues. Spotting the reporters, he shouted, "I'm back. I told you I'd be back."

And he was right. After throwing a session in the bullpen hidden in the left field corner of Turner Field that had pitching coach Rick Peterson flashing thumbs up and whispering, "awesome," over and over, Martinez retreated to manager Willie Randolph's office with Peterson and a contingent of Mets' executives.
