Eleven people who were recently hired by Bergen County under a federal emergency grant to clear debris and remove property damaged by Hurricane Irene are the first of as many as 36 who will be put to work, authorities said Thursday.
The workers, all of whom were either unemployed or displaced by the storm, can earn up to $12,000 under the initiative, known as the Disaster Relief Employment Program, according to a statement from Bergen County.
