Social service advocates pleaded with lawmakers Tuesday for more money and for help fighting a plan to charge the poorest residents a co-pay for prescription drugs, medical services and preschool care.

Members of the Assembly Budget Panel were also asked to reconsider Governor Corzine's plan to steer nearly $200 million in federal money away from social programs to help balance a $30.9 billion budget that includes sweeping tax increases.
