88 Aboard Newark Flight Detained ; Latinos Held On Immigration Charges

NEWARK - Acting on a tip that a plane carrying scores of illegal aliens was heading to Newark Liberty International Airport, federal agents detained 88 people, all Latin Americans who had flown in from Los Angeles.

The Continental flight left Los Angeles International Airport at 10 p.m. Wednesday, and when it landed at Newark early Thursday, federal agents were waiting, said Jim Michie, a spokesman for the bureau of Customs and Border Protection in Washington. The bureau is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
