When FBI agents wanted to reconstruct the movements of a rogue New York City cop who staged a $1 million perfume heist in Carlstadt last February, they turned to cellphone records to trace his steps. Using a computer mapping program and "call detail" logs obtained from Sprint Nextel, agents plotted the locations of 42 cell sites in Bergen and Hudson counties and New York to track Kelvin L. Jones' movements as the armed robbery plot unfolded. Jones was convicted last month.
* New Jersey expects to announce approvals for new charter schools today from among nearly 50 applicants. * Consultants say they are advising the state to develop "performance contracts" for charters that would set specific goals for test scores, graduation rates and other indicators. Failure to meet targets on time would jeopardize the charter's renewal.
Charter Schools Falling Short?
With the Christie administration poised to announce approvals for a new wave of charter schools today, some educators say the state needs to be more vigilant in making sure charters keep their promises to be models of reform. While some charters, like North Star Academy in Newark, winner of a national Blue Ribbon for excellence, are shining successes, others underperform even in the most troubled districts.
The old and faded flag down at Veterans Park in Glen Rock needed replacing. And across town, a not-so-old Vietnam veteran named Tom Egan was fighting a fading battle against cancer. On Monday, Glen Rock found a way to pay homage to both.
