Athletes of the Week

Kyle Latorre has developed a genuine sense of community. The Hasbrouck Heights senior basketball player has put in about 60 hours volunteering for a muscular dystrophy telethon. He works at basketball camps and coaches junior football players in town during the summer.

Athletes of the Week

Go ahead. Underestimate Desiree Rosa. But do so at your own risk.

Highlands' Diestel Stuns Wayne Valley

ALLENDALE -- Junior guard Casey Diestel scored a career-high 15 points, all in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning three- pointer with five seconds remaining to lead Northern Highlands to a dramatic 62-61 victory over Wayne Valley in Monday in the semifinals of the Northern Highlands boys basketball tournament. The Highlanders overcame a 10-point deficit in the final four minutes. They advance to tonight's final against Fair Lawn, which defeated Paramus, 65-62.

Hometown Heroes Win ; Passaic Valley Reaches Final

LITTLE FALLS -- Passaic Valley hockey coach Mike Sheehan opened the door to the locker room and shouted to his players. "How did THAT feel?" Sheehan asked.

Atlantic City or Bust ; First Things First for Heights/Wood-Ridge's Dequinzio

Joe DeQuinzio stood on one of the four center mats in Atlantic City last season and just drank it in. He had been to the New Jersey State wrestling championships countless times as a spectator, seen the crowds, heard the noise. But that moment last season, standing in his corner waiting for his quarterfinal bout to begin, was the first time the noise rained down on him.

50th Annual Bcca George Jockish Holiday Wrestling Tournament

Defending champion: Paramus became the first public school in 19 years to win the team title, beating second-place Don Bosco by a mere four points. Mark Cirello defeated returning region champ Taylor Trumbetti of Pascack Hills in the final bout of the tournament to cap the win for the Spartans. Outlook: After waiting so long to win the championship, Paramus is set to defend. The Spartans return all but three wrestlers from last season and again could find themselves eye to eye with Bosco and ...

Bcca George Jockish Holiday Wrestling Tournament All-Time Team

BY DECADE Bergen County Coaches Association wrestling coaches selected honorees by decade, regardless of weight class. Honorable mention selections had to be a BCCA champion and also meet one of the following criteria: State champion, two- or three-time BCCA champion, State finalist, three BCCA medals and State medal.

Angels Turn Tables ; Zone Stymies Pascack Valley; Montclair Next

HILLSDALE -- Holy Angels obviously learned a thing or two from its opening-day loss to Pascack Valley. The Angels came out with a zone defense Monday instead of playing man-to-man. They were much more aggressive and didn't give Pascack Valley a chance to set the pace.

Guards Bice, Gashi Dynamic Duo for Lodi

WOOD-RIDGE -- Ersi Bice is the flashier of the two. He's the speedy 5-foot-6 senior point guard who dribbles through pressure, throws no-look passes and scores in bunches. Viktor Gashi is the quietly efficient one. He's the 5-9 senior off guard who plays defense, rebounds and when you check the scorebook, he's had another double-digit scoring night.

Nh Holds On to Defeat W. Valley

ORADELL -- All Northern Highlands could do was watch. What seemed to be a game it had in hand continued to look like it was about to slip away until the final buzzer.

Hinton Leads Passaic Tech Rally

OAKLAND -- Aazaad Hinton starts for Passaic Tech's boys basketball team because of the way the sophomore guard defends. It was Hinton's offense, however, that helped the Bulldogs beat Hackensack on Monday night to advance to the championship game of the 23rd annual Indian Hills Holiday Basketball Festival.

Giants Ink Derosa

Mark DeRosa might have been a great fit for either the Yankees or the Mets, but the Bergen Catholic graduate is headed to San Francisco. A Giants spokesperson reportedly confirmed that the Carlstadt native passed his physical and will be announced today as the club's newest right-handed hitter and primary third baseman. He reportedly will receive a two-year contract worth $12 million.

Rangers' Offense Takes a Hit ; Prospal Shelved After Knee Surgery

The Rangers will be without their second-leading scorer for the next 10 days to three weeks after left wing Vinny Prospal underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Monday. The 34-year-old Czech had a torn lateral meniscus repaired by team doctor Anthony Maddalo at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

Devils Notes

Clarkson returns Devils right wing David Clarkson made sure to be involved in his first game back from a fractured right fibula. Clarkson squared off with Atlanta's Chris Thorburn in a fight 13:45 into Monday's game and landed a few good punches, including a right that knocked off Thorburn's helmet.

Nets Notes

Similarities? Nenad Krstic is surprised at what's happened to his former team and feels bad Lawrence Frank was fired.

Nets Thunder-Struck ; Lose 10th Straight As Durant Pours in 40 Points

EAST RUTHERFORD -- The Nets were bouncing around with energy as they pulled ahead of the Thunder in the third period. But when Oklahoma City lifted its game, the Nets showed why they're on pace for the worst season in NBA history. As the Thunder struck, the Nets crashed - again.

No Luck for Nate, Eddy

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- After spending the past three games watching from the bench, Toney Douglas should get his number called tonight at Detroit by Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni. And despite his considerable rustiness, Jonathan Bender will continue to receive court time.

Jets' Report Card

Running game: B-plus Like everything else, this probably should be graded separately, with Peyton Manning in the game and after Manning left. The Jets managed only 54 yards in the first half, but after Manning departed, they rolled up 148 yards. Thomas Jones broke a 29-yard run against the sagging, dispirited Colts' defense in the fourth quarter, setting up his own 1-yard score. Jones (105) and Shonn Greene totaled 200 yards.

Giants' Report Card

Running game: D-minus Ahmad Bradshaw had two decent bursts, but any game plan designed to run the ball disintegrated as the Carolina lead grew and grew in the first half. This has been an area of disappointment all season, no matter how coach Tom Coughlin wishes to view it. Brandon Jacobs (bad knee or not) gaining a yard on six carries tells it all -- the Giants were unable to control games with the run in 2009, and Sunday was no exception.

Coach's Permission ; Hall's Hazell Keeps Firing

NEWARK -- Jeremy Hazell and his coach are a near perfect match. Like his top scorer, Seton Hall's Bobby Gonzalez routinely snubs his nose at college basketball conventionalism.
