Dreamer's Reality ; Stars, Throngs Shine As D.C. Opens Inaugural Celebrations
A who's who of movie and musical stars joined President-elect Barack Obama on Sunday for an "opening celebration" of the run-up to Inauguration Day. But along with singing "American Pie" with Garth Brooks and "Lean on Me" with Mary J. Blige, the hundreds of thousands gathered on the National Mall also got a heavy dose of the serious issues the nation is confronting and exhortations to join together to confront them.
Dreamers' Reality ; for Many, Obama Living King's Wish for Equality
When members of the Rhema Worship Center in Hackensack began organizing their Martin Luther King Jr. Day service, it seemed only natural to feature President-elect Barack Obama. "This year is significant. You're talking about 46 years since Dr. King's speech," said the Rev. Eric Brewer, referencing King's "I Have a Dream" speech. 'Thumps' Heard On Jet's Voice Recorder
The voice recorder aboard US Airways Flight 1549 captured "thumps" followed by a rapid decrease in engine sound about 90 seconds after the jet left La Guardia Airport on Thursday afternoon, federal investigators said Sunday. The voice and flight data recorders were recovered from the plane after it was hoisted out of the murky, frigid water off lower Manhattan late Saturday night, and taken to Washington for review.
