Yankees Notes

No save chances The score was tied in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, yet manager Joe Torre chose not to turn to closer Mariano Rivera. Of course, one reason was that Torre was hoping the Yanks could get to extra innings, take the lead and provide a save situation for Rivera. He also didn't want to use Rivera for two innings, which he likely would have felt compelled to do had Rivera pitched the ninth and had the Yanks gone ahead in the 10th.

Corrections

Senior Alyssa Maier was part of River Dell's first-team all-BCSL American 1,600 relay team in the spring, not Alyssa May as was reported in The Record on Monday. Westwood senior Dylan Cacciola did not pitch in the North-South All-Star Game on June 16, as was reported Tuesday.

Gray Report: The Sporty 40s

Hold the jokes about old-timers' day for some other time. An anticipated record for most pitchers in their 40s starting on the same day seven did not come about Wednesday, when heavy rain caused the game between the Rangers and the Tigers to be postponed.

Mariners Get Best of Bosox

Jose Lopez was watching the unpredictable Manny Ramirez just like many curious people do at a Red Sox game. Lopez noticed that Ramirez was positioned close to the left field line in the bottom of the 11th, creating a large gap in left- center.

Ortmeyer to Hit the Market ; Rangers Making No Effort to Retain Free Agent

GREENBURGH, N.Y. It appears more and more evident that Jed Ortmeyer's days of crashing into the corners as a New York Ranger are numbered. Ortmeyer becomes an unrestricted free agent Sunday and his agent, Mark Witkin, said there has been no contact between the two parties. "I guess we would say we are still waiting to hear from the Rangers, and nothing is going on now and so I can't comment other than that," Witkin said. "There's nothing really to report."

Sports Ticker

BASEBALL Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is out through at least the All- Star break because of a sore right shoulder, and he doesn't know when he can begin throwing again. * Shea Hillenbrand has been granted his wish by the Angels, who designated him for assignment, meaning they have 10 days to trade, release or demote him to the minors.

Nothing's Like a Day at the Lake

There are good days on the water where every cast seems to be a winner. There are not so good days notice how I didn't say bad, because there are no such things as bad fishing days where everything comes up empty. And every so often there is a perfect kind of day that really captures the spirit of fishing and reminds us of everything we love about the sport. They seem to come around when you least expect them a few times each summer, and I had my first of the season last week at one of my f...

Hey Moose: Pitch More, Whine Less

Random summer thoughts: Coming soon to the YES Network: the Mike Mussina-Roger Clemens excuse-athon.

Ridgewood's Lenihan Pulling Double Duty

PISCATAWAY - Dan Lenihan has been eagerly awaiting one thing since he stepped onto the field and started to prepare for tonight's North-South All-Star Football Game. Sure, practice has been fun. The game itself, played under the lights inside Rutgers Stadium, should prove to be exciting.

Finizio's Speed Puts Her Among Elite ; Joins Giordano, Kemezis, Schillizzi On First Team

In baseball, it doesn't get any better than the five-tool players. The Vladimir Guerrero types who can hit for power and for average, who can throw missiles from the outfield, can field better than anyone and kick it into high gear on the base paths.

Andy Carries U.S. Banner ; Roddick Best Hope to Snap America's Grand Slam Slump

WIMBLEDON, England As if all the questions he gets about the recent lack of U.S. success at Grand Slam tournaments weren't enough, Andy Roddick tours the world with another constant reminder of his country's glory days: his coach, Jimmy Connors. So there was Connors, chin on hand, watching intently Wednesday at Wimbledon while his pupil did the kind of things they've been working on. Roddick went to the net, returned well and beat Danai Udomchoke of Thailand, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to reach th...

Esposito at Home at Tourney

DENVILLE Frank Esposito doesn't eat fish, but the head pro from Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park is right at home at the Clambake. Esposito won the New Jersey PGA Charity Clambake for the third consecutive year and might be the first to three-peat at the same NJPGA major.

Top 5 Guards

There are talented shooting guards/swingmen in this draft, but also plenty of point guards to pick from: 1. Mike Conley, Jr. (6-1, 180, PG, Ohio State, Fr.): Son of an Olympic track star, Conley reads defenses well and makes good decisions; can get in the paint at will and finish with both hands.

Florida Teammates Hope They'll Make Draft History

NEW YORK Florida's Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer have had a special bond ever since joining the Gators. They brought consecutive NCAA championships to Florida, turning it into more than just a "football school." At tonight's NBA draft, they hope to become the first trio from the same school to be selected in the top 10.

Ochoa Facing Major Moment of Truth

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. In the sweltering heat of late afternoon, Lorena Ochoa kept a steady stride as she ran briskly along the fairways and pine trees, rarely taking her eyes off the cart path. Constantly pushing herself to get stronger, fitter and better, Ochoa also is starting to race time.

Theodore Commits to Hall

Point guard Jordan Theodore of Englewood, who just completed his junior year at Paterson Catholic, has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at Seton Hall. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder committed to Pirates assistant coach Geoff Billet on Wednesday.

Pro Wrestler, Wife Argued Over Care of Disabled Son

ATLANTA In the days before authorities said pro wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and child and hanged himself, the couple argued over whether he should stay home more to take care of their mentally disabled 7-year-old son, an attorney for the wrestling league said Wednesday. "I think it's fair to say that the subject of caring for that child was part of what made their relationship complicated and difficult, and it's something they were both constantly struggling with," said Jerry McDev...

Time to Seerayrun ; Web Site Touts Ru's Heisman Hopeful Rice

The magazine covers meant photo shoots and Ray Rice obviously remembers them. The Web site is kind of like last year's and so that didn't bowl him over, either. No, if anything in Rice's Heisman Trophy push is going to have him saying "wow," it'll probably have to come from his mother.
