Making His Last Season Memorable ; Dwight-Englewood Goalie Looking to Excel in Final Year of Eligibility

Ben Feldberg found it easy to not look ahead when the season began. The season was still new and hopeful and getting off to a good start was paramount to the Dwight-Englewood junior goalie. It also was better than looking at this as his last season of high school lacrosse.

Ramapo Rolls Into Tourney

The Ramapo baseball team routed Manhattanville, 12-4, Tuesday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y., in a non-conference matchup that was a tune-up for Thursday's opening round of the NJAC tournament. Ramapo (29-11), is the fourth seed in this year's tourney, and will play No. 3 Montclair State (20-15) in Thursday's opener.

High Anxiety for Devils ; Face Deep Hole If They Don't Get Their Attack Going

OTTAWA Just two weeks ago, the Devils were getting outworked by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs, but dug down deep in Game 4 and found a way to come back to win the series. Now, they are in the same 2-1 hole against the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference semifinals and they have to do it again.

Rangers Notes

Thornton Puts Bite in the Sharks' Attack

SAN JOSE, Calif. The Sharks shuffled their lines and upped their intensity midway through the game, yet they owed their Game 3 comeback against the Detroit Red Wings to one constant factor in this postseason. No matter the opponent or the situation, Joe Thornton has erased his reputation as a playoff underachiever.

Yankees Notes

Hamstrung Now that Phil Hughes is headed to the disabled list with a hamstring strain, there's even more scrutiny on the Yankees' new strength and conditioning team. "I think that question's already been raised," said Mike Mussina, one of four Yankees to have suffered hamstring strains since the end of spring training. "I don't know if it's been answered."

Mets Notes

Alou shoulders load As Moises Alou told it, he already was getting an MRI on his aching right shoulder Tuesday morning, so he figured why not save another trip?

Good Tv Reception ; Murcer Gets Warm Greeting in Return to Booth

ARLINGTON, Texas Bobby Murcer couldn't re-enter the Yankees world quietly. As he walked into the visitor's clubhouse at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday afternoon, there were immediate welcoming shouts from Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez.

Hancock Had Earlier Crash

SAUGET, Ill. Three days before he was killed in a highway wreck, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was involved in a predawn accident that police treated routinely. Officers who talked with the 29-year-old reliever moments after the front of his sport utility vehicle was clipped by a tractor- trailer in this village known for its factories and strip clubs, found Hancock lucid. He did not appear under the influence of alcohol, police chief Patrick Delaney said Tuesday.

A's Late Rally Sinks Red Sox

Dan Johnson doubled home the winning run in the 10th inning after Jonathan Papelbon suffered his first blown save in the ninth and the Oakland Athletics stopped the surging Red Sox, 5-4, Tuesday night in Boston. The Red Sox had won four of five games and began the day with the best record in baseball, but wasted a 4-2 lead and another strong performance by Curt Schilling.

The Dirt On the Derby ; Some Horses Have Never Run On This Surface

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Assuming one exists, the trainer's manual on how to prepare a horse for the Kentucky Derby is now more outdated than polyester suits. The 20-horse field for Saturday's Run for the Roses is a study in non-conventionalism. There's Street Sense, trying to become the first Breeders' Cup Juvenile champ to win a Derby. There's Curlin, who despite not running as a 2-year-old, will be one of the favorites when oddsmaker Mike Battaglia posts the early morning line today. There are sev...

Nets Notes

Almost dj vu On Game 5's final play, Vince Carter and Jason Kidd thought about repeating history.

Mets' Future Looks Brighter

NEW YORK Much of what happened for the Mets on the field Tuesday night was positive. Most of what happened on the scoreboard was not. Although the night showed long-range promise, all the Mets got in the short term was a loss.

Hughes Could Miss 4-6 Weeks

ARLINGTON, Texas Inching closer to history with each pitch, Phil Hughes had a no-hitter going deep into his second major league start. He also owned a nine-run lead, and had the Yankees believing in brighter days at last. And then he grabbed his left hamstring.

Rangers Breathe Easier ; Get Crucial Call to Even Series

NEW YORK - Henrik Lund-qvist kicked out his legs and stopped the puck with his right skate, but even he wasn't so sure he actually made a save. "Mentally I got ready for a 2-2 game," the Rangers' goalie said.

Road-Tripped ; Woeful Start Dooms Nets to Tough Loss

TORONTO - The Nets that looked so dominant at home, with Jason Kidd and Vince Carter playing like they wanted to carry the team deep into this postseason, didn't make it through customs. The defensive-minded Nets that shut down Toronto in Games 3 and 4 in New Jersey also had trouble making it over the border.
