Teaneck has never been considered a fencing powerhouse like Ramapo or Holy Angels. "I remember a time when everyone was glad to see us, so they could beat us up," coach Pat Lawrence said, laughing.

A Bak Attack ; Staying Aggressive Alleviates Pressure
Adrian Bak thrives under pressure. At the Junior Olympics in Colorado in February, Bak seeded third in the pool found himself down, 14-13, to his 16th-seeded opponent.
When you're at the top, often it's easy to sit back and let the compilation of past achievements speak for itself. Sure, Ramapo could have done that. But that's just not the Green Raiders' style.

Demarest set its goals high, then surpassed them. "Every year we start off with a goals meeting, and this year the girls surprised me," said coach Mike Ives. "One of their goals was to win a State sectional title. That really caught me off guard, because I didn't know that they knew what a State sectional title was."
Magic Moments ; Ravettine Excelled in Back-to-Back Meets
Bryeanne Ravettine owes it all to magic mashed potatoes. When Ravettine was young, she would be so nervous before swim meets, her knees would quake and she would cry, but her grandmother would tell her not to worry because her dinner the night before was special.

At the first meet of the winter season in December, Zach Shapiro threw the shot put 51 feet 5 inches, three feet farther than he had thrown the winter before and a foot farther than he had thrown in the spring. But 51 feet wasn't what the River Dell senior had in mind when he gave up football after his sophomore year to try to excel as a weight man on the Golden Hawks' track and field team.
Even when Don Bosco was earning The Record's North Jersey Indoor Track Team of the Year honors last winter, Bosco coach Rob DeCarlo was looking ahead to this season. And this winter his team showed everyone why.
Max Bruno, Indian Hills 800 and 1,000 meters, high jump, junior
Showing Pop ; Freshman Follows in Dad's Footsteps
Matt Priore is almost good enough to beat his father more times than not and that day could come later this year. Priore and his father, Dave, bowled together in a league and Dad's 221 average enabled him to top his son "about 70 percent of the time" and survive "a lot [of teasing] from my friends."
Chris Briamonte Paramus Catholic, senior
Rapid Recovery ; Carrillo Bounced Back From Hip Injury
Joely Carrillo came a long way following a summer hip injury that forced her to stop bowling for two months. Carrillo steadily improved each week and capped her junior season at Paramus Catholic by returning to the five-player stepladder final at the State girls championships and finishing third.
Sophs Kept Eagles Rolling Along
Immaculate Heart's lineup was dominated by sophomores, yet it won every match in the NNJIL and all but one of 48 games. Four of the five Blue Eagles at the Bergen County championship were sophomores, yet they ran away with the title.
