WASHINGTON - Congress will investigate whether baseball slugger Rafael Palmeiro perjured himself when he told a House committee that he hadn't taken steroids. With the player's consent, Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, and the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Henry Waxman of California, asked Major League Baseball on Wednesday to turn over information about the failed drug test that resulted in a 10-day suspension for Palmeiro this week.

NEW YORK - The Islanders traded captain Michael Peca to the Edmonton Oilers for center Mike York on Wednesday, shortly after signing high-scoring forward Miroslav Satan to a three-year deal. Blazers Cut Van Exel

The Portland Trail Blazers waived veteran guards Nick Van Exel and Derek Anderson on Wednesday. Van Exel, 34, averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 assists and made 39 starts last season before going on the injured list March 12 with left knee pain.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day is retiring, bringing to an end one of horse racing's greatest and most lucrative careers. Day, who won the 1992 Kentucky Derby aboard Lil E. Tee, has 8,804 victories and is the career money leader with purses totaling $297,941,912. His 32-year racing career comes to a close just months after he returned to racing following hip surgery.

River Vale Delivers Title for Bergen County

LYNDHURST - All the signs pointed to River Vale finally breaking the 37-year drought of a Bergen County team winning the American Legion state title. The Ravens were 29-0 going into Wednesday's state final against Milltown and had outscored their previous two opponents, 28-4.
