Dangerous Mindset ; Working Against Bush Plan Is Not Terrorism

EDUCATION Secretary Rod Paige acknowledges that he used an "inappropriate" choice of words this week in calling the National Education Association a "terrorist organization." Inappropriate is putting it mildly. After Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist is about the worst thing you can call someone. The self-righteous "sky is falling" tone of a report accusing the Bush administration of tailoring science to narrow political goals may be a tipoff that at least some of its authors have an agenda other than the disinterested pursuit of truth. Some authors of the 46-page study, organized by the liberal Massachusetts-based Union of Concerned Scientists, certainly have strong political views about Presi-dent Bush.

The Real Oscar Winners

WE PLACE too much value on first place. How bad is second place? The Oscars are coming. Each category gets five nominations. The first place gets an Oscar. The four others are declared losers. Why? To be voted one of five in any category should make you a winner. In 1956, I was nominated for my performance in "Lust for Life."
